Eternal Life — Week 4
By Peggy Land, wife of Dr. Steven J. Land, President of the Church of God Theological Seminary
“But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life” (Romans 6:22, NASB).
The wait in that long line of traffic felt like an eternity. It felt like an eternity sitting in the doctor’s office. Waiting for those test results felt like an eternity. The long night watches with the sick child felt like an eternity. You could add your own list of “waits” that seemed like an eternity.
Eternity, never ending! Eternal, everlasting! The Father, Son and Holy Spirit is eternal. The Word will never pass away, and it is eternal. Heaven is eternal. Hell is eternal. These are forever, final destinations. Today is the day to think about eternity and the eternal. Eternity will never end.
Eternal life! Our Lord promises us life eternal with Him if we turn away from evil and follow Him each day. We want to proclaim the testimony, “Saved, sanctified, filled with the Holy Spirit, ready to go should Christ come or call.” His life was sacrificed on Calvary so every human being could have eternal life.
Eternal damnation! Jesus paid the supreme price so every human being could escape the flames of hell. In His omnipotence, He gives every human being an opportunity to know Him. The rich man was given the daily witness of Christ through Lazarus who lay daily at his gate. The rich man chose earthly gain, forgetting God. He died and lifted up his eyes in torment. Lazarus chose eternal treasures by serving God. He died and went to Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:19-31).
Our God is an unchanging God (Malachi 3:6). He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). We must hold to His unchanging hand. The following verses clearly echo the truth of the Word:
Time is filled with swift transition,
Naught of earth unmoved can stand,
Build your hopes on things eternal,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand!
Chorus:
Hold to God’s unchanging hand,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand!
Build your hope on things eternal,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.
Covet not this world’s vain riches,
That so rapidly decay,
Seek to gain the heav’nly treasures,
They will never pass away.
(“Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand,” Jennie Wilson and F. L. Eiland)
Saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Spirit, ready to go should Christ come or call! Now is the time. The day is late. Signs of the time say His return is near, even at the door. Now is the time to speak to our neighbors about this great gift of salvation. Now is the time to tell the lost how good our God is to give to us eternal life. Let us pray to win the lost to Christ. Eternity awaits!
“Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2, NASB).
