Understanding the Keys” — Week 2
By Dr. Su Vining, Family Ministries

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven…”
(
Matthew 16:19).

When Christ says to Peter and the disciples, “I give you the keys of the kingdom,” what potential did that have?  Many of us live our lives rummaging through our spiritual purses hunting for missing keys.  We must understand these keys are entrusted to us by God.  We must understand their purpose, power, and potential in our daily lives.

  • You must understand the purpose of the keys.

This is where things can get misconstrued or misunderstood.  Greed and power plays can get in the way of understanding the true purpose of the keys.  The keys are for Kingdom use.  They are not for personal gain or selfish glory.  They are not for free Cadillacs.  They are keys to unlock the mystery of the kingdom of God.  They are for Kingdom use to bring honor and glory to the kingdom of God.

  • You must understand the power of the keys.  The keys of the Kingdom are powerful.
  1. They can bind and loose.  We have heavenly authority to lock and unlock.
  2. The keys can unlock doors that we have tried in our own limited power to knock down or push through.  Are you trying to rid yourself of fear?  Use the key of perfect love to cast it out.  Are you battling weakness?  Unlock the joy of the Lord.  It will give you strength.  Are you struggling with temptation?  God has given you the power to overcome.  Through His own shed blood and the power of a spoken testimony, you can be victorious.  These keys are powerful keys given to us by an omnipotent God.
  • You must understand the potential of the keys.

Our perceptions are powerful.  “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”  When we perceive ourselves as defeated, we are.  When we see the door as locked, it is.  When we perceive the keys as powerful, they are.
