Who Gets the Keys?” — Week 3
By Dr. Su Vining, Family Ministries

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven…”
(
Matthew 16:19).

To whom was Christ speaking about the keys?

  • Those who proclaim Him as Lord.  Christ gives Peter the keys right after he has called Him the Christ, the Son of the living God.  When we recognize Him in His power and majesty, we can understand that the same keys He holds, He gives to us.  We must see Him as the Lord of our life, our situation, our families, our businesses.  To those who proclaim Him as Lord, He grants the keys of the Kingdom.
  • Those who partake of His suffering.  We all want the freebies in life.  Yes, He has the key to patience.  Unfortunately, it is accompanied with tribulation.  Although Peter would deny Him, he would also be willing to boldly proclaim His truth and eventually, he would die for Him.  We must be willing to sacrifice and suffer.  Some things come by prayer and fasting.
  • Those who persevere to the end.  Christ has the keys to death, hell, and the grave.  The final keys we receive will be to a heavenly reward and it will come because of our perseverance.  Those who give up will not receive the keys into the Kingdom.  Read Philippians 6:18:  “…watching thereunto with all perseverance.”
  • Those who wait with patience.  God may not reveal to us everything in His kingdom at one time.  Through maturity, through perseverance, through spiritual growth, we obtain the keys.  Read Romans 8:25:  “If we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it?”Have you ever seen anyone that had all of the spiritual gifts, manifested all of the fruit of the Spirit, and correctly discerned all of the scriptures?  They would have no reason to keep living here on earth.  Through our daily spiritual walk and talk with Him, we begin to unlock more of the blessings and mysteries of God.
