“The Gift that Lasts” – Week 1
By Paula L. Cowdell, Ministry to the Military, SHAPE, Belgium
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Every year at Christmastime, I like to bake and decorate gingerbread men. I place each decorated cookie in a baggie and either tie a ribbon or attach an ornament hanger at the top. I then hang them on the tree. Whenever someone stops by to visit, they are invited to take a cookie off the tree as a special gift from me.
One by one the cookies will disappear. By the time the holiday season is over, they will all be gone. The cookies will either have been eaten or thrown away. They probably won’t even be remembered by most people until the next Christmas season. No matter how much love, thought, and money goes into those gingerbread men, they just won’t last.
God, however, gave us a perfect gift. Through His son, Jesus, He gave us eternal life. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” The amazing thing about God’s gift is that not only will the gift last forever, but so will the one who receives it. God invites whosoever will, to receive His gift. The next time you bite into a gingerbread man, remember the gift that will last forever.
