“The Christmas Card” – Week 4
By Paula L. Cowdell, Ministry to the Military, SHAPE, Belgium
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
One of my favorite Christmas cards has a Gary Larson Far Side cartoon on the front of it. The picture is a wiseman holding a fruitcake and walking away from the stable. The words on the card say, Unbeknownst to most theologians, there was a fourth wiseman, who was turned away for bringing a fruitcake. Now, you may be trying to imagine what this card looks like, and why I like it so much. I guess you just have to see it for yourself.
Unlike the one mentioned above, God sent us a truly meaningful Christmas card. John 1 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
The Word is Jesus, and Jesus came to earth in the form of a baby. Christmas is a time we celebrate His birth. God sent us a Christmas card that is for every day of the year. He sent His Word. I guess you just have to see it for yourself!
