“Light Up Your Branches” – Week 5
By Paula L. Cowdell, Ministry to the Military, SHAPE, Belgium

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

My parents have a recording of me at a very young age singing, “Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, will you light up your branches?”!I still enjoy looking at the Christmas trees when their branches are brightly lit.

Jesus tells us that He is the vine and we are His branches.  It is in Him that we receive life and light.  The Psalmist said, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  And, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”  Proverbs 6:23 tells us, “the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light.”

As we remain in Christ and Christ in us, we, as His branches will be light in this dark world.  Jesus put it this way, “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

As you enjoy the lights this Christmas season, let it be a reminder to stay in the Word to keep your light shining brightly.
