Remembering God’s Goodness — Week 1
By Mavis Arnett, Retired Minister’s wife and co-chair of the “Young at Heart” at Callaway Park Church of God, LaGrange, Georgia.
Scripture: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Sitting at work on a cold, wintry January morning our cell phone rang and it was none other than Pam Overbey (now known as Pamela Kay Overbey) from the Women’s Ministries office of the Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee.
To my surprise she was asking me to write the devotions for the month of June. As my mind began traveling from one subject to another, I began to reminiscence about the “good ole days.” At my age, I certainly can remember many things about that time of my life.
Being a part of a large family, seven of us, and raised on a farm, life was very interesting. My dad, a Church of God minister, sold many different things to keep his family fed and clothed. In those days, churches lived mostly on love and tater pie. God was very real to us and giving to others was a part of our lives as well. As we grew up, we were told many times about our dad giving our last sack of flour away to a family who was more in need than we were. Actually, it was our last sack of flour at the time. But serving a big God we never missed a meal.
God saw fit to take our dad home to heaven at the age of 32. Naturally, this left our 31-year-old mother to feed and clothe us children. Many times she reminded us that “we were living on our dad’s prayers.”
I cannot fail to tell you about our little rural church near Woodland, Alabama. It was and still is Gray Hill Church of God. First, I remember the brush arbor and then a few years later a block church. The card class was such a treat. We were able each Sunday to have beautiful card with scriptures on it to take home with us. In those days, what a treat!
Our worship services rang with songs such as “I’ll Fly Away,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and many more uplifting ones. The saints of God would soon begin to rejoice in the Lord. The floor was made of wood and the tapping of feet began, and soon the saints were on their feet dancing under the power of the Holy Ghost. When they prayed, there was no doubt God heard them. One of our ladies came to our humble home one night to pray for me. I had terrible earaches. When she came in the door, she was speaking in a heavenly language and as soon as she touched my head, I went to sleep. In all of my years since, I have never had another earache. Oh, yes, the power was real! Thank God He is still real today. There were many wonderful testimonies of what God was doing in their lives. Those were such anointed words that have lived with me for my lifetime.
It is good to remember our God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
