Remembering God’s Goodness, Part 2 — Week 4
By Mavis Arnett, Retired Minister’s wife and co-chair of the “Young at Heart” at Callaway Park Church of God, LaGrange, Georgia.

As I sit here typing this devotion, the sun is shining and it is such a beautiful day that the Lord has given us.  I trust that wherever you are, you, too, are enjoying the greatness of our God.

I have had the happy privilege of being a part of your life for the month of June, and I trust you have been blessed.

alzprayerpic.jpgI wish to pick up on my life after the first week’s introduction of myself.  The Lord has had His hand on me in so many ways.  First, I will say that God truly chose my life mate and placed me in one of the greatest places in the world—that is to be a pastor’s wife for about 48 years.  We have pastored in a number of different states and truly enjoyed each one.

There has been a wonderful journey of traveling and meeting such wonderful folk in the Church of God and otherwise.  If you are a retired person, because of your husband’s work or yours, you know the feeling of sometimes not being needed any more.  I wish to encourage you that God is always the same and will be there no matter what.  Look for small things to do for someone else.  In doing for others, God uses us to bless them and therefore we are blessed.

I have been blessed to be Sunday school teacher throughout our pastorate.  I truly miss being a part of that, but it is amazing how God has placed us in so many different jobs, that we could only accomplish through Christ.  He fills our lives with such joy.  He has given us two wonderful children and five “grands” and soon we are to be great-grandparents.

May I make some suggestions that you may be able to do?  The telephone is one of the greatest tools that anyone could have in their home.  Call the sick folk you know and encourage them in the Lord.  If you still cook, use your wonderful ideas in the food line and share with someone.  Send cards.  Everyone loves to get them.  Be sure to go to your local church and have good fellowship, not only with the Lord but with your fellowman.

God has placed us in our County Senior Center.  This is a tremendous blessing to us.  My husband ministers there every Friday.  The food is delicious and very inexpensive.  The fellowship of all the folk has proven to be a great blessing to us.  Don’t keep yourself from people, but reach out and then they will truly reach back to you.  As someone said, “Let go of the past and be happy.”

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Psalm 100:4).

Remember God’s goodness.  He is indeed worthy of our praise!

Note:  I would like to insert that Mavis Arnett was my Sunday school teacher in the late 80s.  She was always encouraging, inspirational and shared the Word of the Lord from her heart.  Isn’t it unique the way God allows our lives to continue to cross paths?  When I think about the goodness of the Lord, I remember Sister Mavis.
