Fireflies — Week 1
By Ina Boling, State Women’s Ministries President, Texas

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,  and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

Have you ever really thought about the fireflies that light up a summer evening?  They look like stars that have come down to earth to give forth their light.

Seeing them reminds me of my carefree days of summer when I was young.  I would catch them and put them in a jar for a little while and watch them after I turned off the light.

Fireflies have two things that they can teach us.  The first is that even when they are out of their environment, they still give forth their light.  It is because that is what they were made to do.  Christ tells us that we are the light of the world.  We are made to shine; and we are to shine even when we are out of our element, and also when we may be put into a new environment.

The second thing that fireflies can teach us is that even though they may be there during the day and may be blinking, their light is not seen until there is darkness.  Our light also shines brightest in the darkness.

So this summer when you watch fireflies, remember their lessons.  Be a light that can shine even when out of your element, and know that darkness only makes your light brighter.

Thought for the Day:  May I always let my light shine even when it can’t be seen, and especially in the dark times when it is most needed.
