Idea of the Month — June 2008
Love Sunday
By Ann Roberts, Tampa, Florida
Adapted from an idea in TIPS, Volume One (available from www.womensministries.cc).
Objective:
An annual event planned to encourage couples to repeat their wedding vows, reminding them of their spiritual and physical commitment to each other.
Date:
A Sunday A.M. service.
Location:
Church sanctuary
Time:
During morning worship
Main Event:
Immediately following the pastor’s sermon, couples line up in the back of the sanctuary to prepare to walk down the aisle together while someone is singing a love song. Pastor and wife, hand in hand, walk down to meet couples in front of the altar. The couples proceed down the aisle while the traditional wedding march is being played. Pastor admonishes couples spiritually and reminds them of their pledge to each other. He then proceeds with the traditional wedding ceremony, rewording the vows to say “reaffirm.”
Tips:
- Make reservations for all family members at a nearby restaurant to eat lunch together—a steak house, cafeteria, etc. Find a place that will accommodate the number of persons attending, or perhaps have lunch in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
- The sermon can be directed to married couples, or it can be a sermon about love, such as, “Love Between God and the Church,” “Love One Another,” “God is Love,” etc.
- Make your Love Sunday special by asking participants to wear something white, off-white, or original wedding attire. Be creative in planning the event.
- Have flowers, such as carnations and baby’s breath wrapped in colored tissue for each lady to carry down the aisle.
- Prepare ahead of time to have someone in church take snapshots of each couple after the service has ended.
- Place Love Sunday on the church calendar as an annual event!
