LEADERSHIP IDEA — December 2008

Christmas is such an exciting and busy time of year for everyone, but also a great time for the church to reach out to each other and to those in the community.  So many different ideas come to mind when thinking about Women’s Ministries and Christmas activities.  Whether decorating the church together or preparing meals for needy families, ladies in the church should come together to celebrate the birth of our Lord and remember those who need Him during this time of year.

When my husband and I were youth pastors in Fitzgerald, Georgia, the ladies of the church always got together for a Christmas party.  It became a tradition in the church to exchange ornaments and bring finger foods and holiday treats to the party.  The ornament exchange was always fun and even got competitive through the games we played to get the “best” ornament.  This event was also a great way to invite other ladies in the community to our church.

To let our volunteers for youth ministry know that they were appreciated, the youth of our church organized a special banquet for them.  We decorated our fellowship hall and prepared a candlelit dinner for the volunteers and their spouses.  The youth dressed in black and white uniforms and played the roles of hosts and hostesses as well as waited on the adults.  When the dinner was over, the youth performed a drama and sang special songs for the adults to let them know how much they were appreciated.  The night turned out to be great and the adults really seemed to know they were loved.

This year my husband and I are in the very beginning stages of planting a new church in Acworth, Georgia.  We are currently meeting in a school on Sundays with around 100 in attendance.  Even though we have just begun, our finances are limited, and we are a small group, we still feel the need to reach out to the community.  This year we are having a Ladies’ Christmas party at a member’s home.  We have adopted a family in need and had them make a “wish list” of items in the $10-$20 price range.  Instead of bringing gifts or ornaments to exchange, we will each choose one item on the list, wrap it and bring it to the party.  We will present all of our gifts to the family before Christmas.  For fun, the ladies are to find one item that they do not use and wrap it up for a “White Elephant” exchange.  The item, however, needs to be something that could represent something about them.  This makes the game more meaningful and helps the ladies to get to know each other a little better.

Whether getting together for fun and games, letting others know they are appreciated, or reaching out to those in need, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus.  What better time to walk out this calling than during the holiday season?  Let us remember Jesus and His birth during this exciting month so that we can share the great news with our community and remember how blessed we are to have a church family.
