LEADERSHIP IDEA—August 2007
By Sissy Stovall, State President, Illinois
We, as women, are very concerned about our appearance. I have probably used forty different kinds of face cream in my lifetime. And for years I didn’t wear make up, but I know I feel like I can use all the help I can get.
If we are so interested in our looks, what about our health?
I write about health issues in my newsletters to our pastors’ wives—from articles I have read . . . being careful to state this is something I have read . . . not tried.
Example:
To slash your risk of heart attack in half, eat a quarter cup of pumpkin seeds four times a week. (This is not something I have tried . . . it would probably make my stomach hurt!)
When you read that drinking wine will drop your risk of diabetes by 58%, I also read that drinking red grape juice will do the same. (I’ll stick with the juice!)
My doctor said if I would eat oatmeal, it would lower my cholesterol (but I eat the instant kind that is flavored.)
I read where blueberries will raise your memory level by enhancing antioxidants in your brain. (When I eat blueberries, it’s in a sweet muffin . . . not good!)
I read where walking can prevent high blood pressure. (My husband walks on a treadmill every morning . . . that’s his prayer time . . . but by the time I get ready, it’s time to go somewhere!)
Looks like I need to improve my eating!
Now . . . what about the most important part of our life?
Proverbs 15:8 says: “The prayer of the upright is His delight.”
First Corinthians 7:5 says: “Give yourselves to fasting and prayer: and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
Second Timothy 2:15 says: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
So there we have it all . . . prayer, fasting, church, self control, and studying God’s Word.
I’m talking to myself here, too! First of all, we need to take care of our spiritual life, then our health, then our beauty.
Remember the old adage . . . “Beauty is as beauty does!”
