BASKET MINISTRY IDEAS
By Joyce Stephens, State Women’s Ministries President, Tennessee
A wonderful ministry that your women and girls can do together is the Basket Ministry. This is a ministry that blesses the families in your church who have a death, an emergency, a new bride or a new baby. Women’s Ministries could have a standard “Basket of Blessings” that is presented from the women and girls in your church. This also can be used to touch those who are not a part of a local church.
Items for the baskets can be donated or purchased with cash donations. This ministry also shows our girls how wonderful it is to be a part of a local church who loves to help during crisis and special times in people’s lives. Allow them to be a part of giving the basket to the recipient also.
Bereavement Basket—Fill a large basket with paper products (cups, utensils, paper plates, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, zip lock storage bags, coffee, creamer packets, sugar packets and bottled water). Deliver the basket and then the following week, you could go by and pick up the empty basket. This gives you two visits during this difficult time.
Baby Basket—Fill a large basket with lotions, toys, newborn items, sleepers, clothing, blankets and a baby’s first Bible. Fill a small basket with some things for the new mother. If there are other children, it would be nice to take them something, too.
Hospital Intensive Care Unit Basket—Fill a basket with snacks, fruit, water, Kleenex, and some reading material. This just lets people know you care. You could have hospital officials notify you if someone is waiting all alone. This would be an excellent opportunity to help someone.
New Bride Basket—Fill a large basket with small kitchen or household gadgets. You could also include a devotion book and a newlywed white Bible.
These are just a few to consider! I know you will come up with many other ways to use “Baskets of Blessings.”
