Widow’s Might

By Rosalie Molloy, Spotsylvania, Virginia

That’s us! We are the widows of the Spotsylvania Church of God and we are excited about the life our God has given us! We are out of the corner where we have been sitting for many years—yep, you remember us, those quiet, fragile and emotional ladies you pass by and avoid at all costs! Well, watch out! We are on the move for Christ! (We're the ladies with the smiles and are for sure NOT wearing black!)

In March, at the leading of God, I, Rosalie Molloy, approached our pastor and asked if I could begin a Widow's Ministry and Pastor Donald Jones gave his permission. In June, Eleanor Ritter, another widow in our group, and I traveled to the Iris B. Vest Widows Ministry Center in Sevierville, Tennessee, for training under the tutorship of Judi Moore and CarolMarie Smith. Meeting the widows at the center was a life-changing experience. They had purpose, freedom and a zest for living all wrapped up in Jesus, their husband. No longer were they sad and bored and listless, they were on fire for God! Eleanor and I brought back their excitement to our group!

We believe women who have lost their husbands need to fellowship, share and learn. We meet twice a month at our Family Life Center for devotions, crafts, short trips and lots of fellowship! We support Bricks of Love, a home building program in Zambia, Africa, with bake sales and other fund raising projects. This month we are baking cookies for our local sheriff's department for a thank you from us during this Thanksgiving season. We also take little field trips—just because!

We encourage our ladies to have a deep and personal relationship with Christ through a program called, Tea for Two, the Master and You. We give a book of devotions and a little teapot to each new widow and suggest she have “Tea with the Master” each morning. Many of our ladies have testified of the positive effect this has had on her life.

Our meeting is open to all churches in the area, no matter what denomination the widow presently attends. We find that Christ is the center of these women's lives and they are looking for something to do that is worthwhile to the Kingdom and to show love and concern for others. Our church has a large senior adult population and we feel that we have been placed here to support and comfort the new widow. This encourages us to learn more and more about His plans for the widow in order to better equip our group as it expands.

We also know that the widow has a need for a place where they can share, cry, grieve, complain, grow and finally find peace in Christ. We believe that this is to be a place where women can come without fear of ridicule, separation or even worse, the fear of being the subject of gossip. A place where the widow can recover and begin on her path to being the Woman of Honor, God has chosen her to be. We believe that the Spotsylvania Widows’ Might is the place God has chosen for us!

We read just how special the widow is in over 120 Scriptures in the Bible.

  • He enlarges our territory in Isaiah 54:1, 3.
  • He hears our cry in Exodus 22:22-24.
  • He blesses those who take care of us in Deuteronomy 14:29, and
  • He declares himself our husband in Isaiah 54:5, 6.

Please pray for our group, we do need your prayers! Exciting times are now, our church takes care of us, we intercede for our church and our church's ministries go out and reap the harvest of souls! We are busy for Christ and excited about the life God has chosen for us. Imagine that, we are CHOSEN to work for Him at a time when we would normally be ignored or over looked because widows sometimes do not fit in many people’s busy life style. Not this group! We are alive and ready to work!

We would be glad to speak to any group that wants more information regarding a widow's ministry in their local church. We are excited to be part of this new ministry in the state of Virginia!
