Dr. Silvina Gonzalez and Volunteers in Medical Missions made a visit to Uruguay in South America. Here is her story in English, followed by Spanish.
Visit of the Volunteers in Medical Missions to Uruguay in South America.
In late August, we received a visit from the Volunteers in Medical Missions group with its director Rev. Dr. Stoney Abercrombie. Sixteen people came from the U.S., among them doctors, nurses, pastors and brethren to help in various medical assistance tasks.
The group was made up of 20 people, among them Dr. Stoney Abercrombie, Dr. Brian Pope, Dr. Amanda Flynn, Dr. David Ruiz, Dr. Jonathan Summers, Dr. Zach Werle, Denise Werle, Dr. Nancy Alexis, Murtice Sheres, Rev. Fred Hubewer, Florence Hubewer, Ruth Underwood, Mary Klas, Bev Dueden and Laura Hodes. From Jujuy, in northern Argentina, came doctor and ophthalmologist Dr. Mirko Guberman, who was able to help many patients by administering ophthalmologic check-ups and giving out glasses that the group from the U.S. brought for the patients. Also from Argentina, Rev. Raquel Echevarria from Buenos Aires helped as a translator and worked at the welcome table for the patients who came for their check-ups. Public accountant Marilina Gonzalez also helped as a translator and worked in the financial area as well as the pharmacy, giving medicine to patients and explaining how to take them.
The work was intense, and we visited various cities in Uruguay; we were able to see more than 900 patients free of charge and give them medicine according to their needs. Several of the patients were taken to local hospitals because they were diagnosed with severe hypertension and diabetes. The medical clinics were in Barrio Borro, Montevideo, to support Pastor Welvi Enriquez's Cerrito Baptist Church; in Vergara, Treinta y Tres, to support Pastor Javier Andrade's Tabernaculo Cristiano Church; in Tacuarembo to support Pastor Justo Santana's Church of God; in Rivera to support two needy neighborhoods: Mandubi, with Pastor Ricardo Rodriguez's Alianza Cristiana y Misionera Church; and Sacrificio, with Pastor Canti Fernandez's Baptist Church. In each of these places, we preached the love of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ through medical missions.
The group was also able to participate in an evangelistic service at the Church of God in Tacuarembo, where Rev. Dr. Abercrombie preached the Word of God and Dr. Silvina Gonzalez served as the translator. Various local television channels and radio stations covered what was done because the medical care and preaching of the Gospel impacted several cities in Uruguay.
Dr. Silvina Gonzalez, who was in charge of the group, was appointed by Church of God World Missions during the last General Assembly in Indianapolis as Medical Missionary for Latin America, with the current objective of mobilizing medical missionary teams throughout Latin America, integrating free medical care, social assistance, theological education and evangelism.
